What protection do animals raised for consumption have in Mexico?
Although it is true that in Mexico we still have a long way to go in terms of laws for animals, especially for those that are in farms and slaughterhouses, the advantage of having some (and constantly working to develop others), is that it remains marking what can and cannot be done to an animal, and the corresponding sanctions if this is not followed. Since our first investigation in Mexico in 2016 until today, and thanks to the evidence of animal cruelty that we filmed, we have made important progress in Mexico for chickens, cows, calves, sheep, chickens and pigs. But for fish it could not be like that because in our country there is no law that protects them. However, it requires an update, as it does not guarantee good levels of well-being , since criteria such as staff training, maximum transport times to avoid stress to the animals, and response procedures to emergency situations need to be adapted. Methods to avoid unnecessary suffering during slaughter are not applied, and we have denounced it! The methods to stun and kill animals are regulated in Official Mexican Standard 033 , the application of which is mandatory in slaughterhouses, slaughterhouses and slaughterhouses. The purpose of this Standard is to establish the methods for killing animals , guaranteeing good levels of well-being, with the purpose of minimizing pain, suffering, anxiety and stress .
